Minutes, Reports, and Correspondence 1966-1979

This series comprises records of the deaconess community board, the body responsible for overseeing administrative matters of the Deaconess Community of the Lutheran Church in America (LCA). The records date from 1966-1979 and include meeting minutes and reports and board correspondence. It appears that the board met approximately two-three times per year. Subject matter discussed at meetings included personnel matters and policies, budgetary and financial practices issues, policies concerning new areas of diaconate ministry, deaconess education, and matters related to capital projects like the addition of the wing for retired sisters to the Gladwyne property. In addition to these records, board correspondence is also in this series. This correspondence dates from 1966-1969, 1977-1979 and pertains to transfer of assets from Baltimore corporation to the deaconess community; the reorganization of the community that occurred in 1978; retirement funds for deaconesses; the study undertaken to reevaluate the future of the diaconate and its relationship to the church-at-large; and the dedication of the new wing on the Gladwyne property. This series originally was missing several meetings' minutes and most of the reports for each meeting. These records were copied from microfilm of deaconess board minutes and reports.
